The first-phase project of the "China Century Altar", an indicative structure for welcoming in the new millenium was completed recently. The external scenic project has been handed over to the organizing committee, to be used at the ceremony held for greeting the new millenium.

The project, China Century Altar, occupies a built-up area of 35,000 square meters. The main part of the altar consists of two layers-the upper and the lower. The revolving altar body, called "qian" or heaven, contains an obliquity and a space-time probe; the lower layer is a fixed round altar, called "kun" or earth.
