Editorial Macao's Return: Second Milestone

Realization of the great reunion of the Chinese nation consists of three stations. Macao's return is the second station.

Bridges in Macao are varied and colorful, Macao compatriots love bridges. History is both merciless and sentimental, it seriously entrusts Macao with the bridge that links with the complete reunification of the motherland. If Hong Kong's return-the first station, has opened a brilliant chapter on the great concept of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems", then, the second station-Macao's homecoming, continues writing about brilliant achievements, it marks a complete end to foreigners' rule in China. Putting an end to foreigners' rule, defending State sovereignty, safeguarding territorial integrity and winning national independence-this is the primary task of modern China's democratic revolution which began in the early 20th century and completed at the end of this century. Fine sons and daughters of one generation after another of the Chinese nation had waged heroic, indomitable and valiant struggles that moved people to songs and tears. This was the loftiest aspiration and greatest expectation of the whole nation which, after fighting protracted and extremely arduous struggles, had finally all been turned into reality. Undoubtedly, this is a great, historic victory of the Chinese people, which will go down as a splendid page in history. It is equally without doubt that the Chinese people always love peace, A thorough end put to foreigners' rule in China marks a new beginning of China's developing friendly and cooperative relations with Western countries, including Portugal, as well as all peace-loving countries. This terminal and starting-point will also go down in history.

The leap to the second station will definitely affect and provide access to the third station. Deng Xiaoping's scientific concept of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems" was put forward first for the solution of the Taiwan issue, but it was put into practice first in Hong Kong and then in Macao. All people who respect facts have clearly seen with assurance that this concept has been crowned with great success in Hong Kong. Success in the second station can more convincingly prove and test the correctness of the concept of "one country, two systems", enabling more and more people to have a direct comprehension of the real content of the "one country, two systems" concept. All sorts of distortion of and slander against this concept will become increasingly pale and weak, and unpopular. This is an objective law independent of man's will, it is an irresistible historical law.

Blood is thicker than water, sentiment is weightier than mountain, peaceful reunification is the general trend. The leap to the second station spurs the coming of the third station; the monument to the second station indicates that the firm and unshakable conviction of the entire Chinese people in achieving the complete reunification of the motherland can definitely come true.

History will prove: Macao's return is a brilliant milestone, an immortal milestone.
