Culture Beijing Builds More Public Libraries

Libraries in Beijing are experiencing rapid growth as more new public libraries open with improved facilities and services.

Beijing has 53 public libraries. Many of the libraries are equipped with advanced technology and modern facilities such as central air-conditioning systems, computer networks, electronic alarms and fire-proof instruments.

Libraries are increasingly paying more attention to their services such as providing special information on agricultural technology for farmers in rural areas. Readers can also browse a wide range of data and information via the Net.

According to statistics, libraries in Beijing contained four million books by the end of 1998, 600,000 copies more than in 1995.
