Nujoma gained 77 percent support in presidential election, with his nearest rival Ben Ulenga of the Congress of Democrats (COD) trailing on 11 percent. The president's SWAPO will have a huge majority of 55 out of 72 seats in Namibia's National Assembly after gaining 76 percent of the vote in last week's parliamentary election. Speaking at a ceremony to announce the final results, Nujoma said: "This vote of confidence fills me with pride and joy." He added that Namibia's two-day elections last week had "shown to the world that democracy is entrenched in a united and peaceful Namibia." Declaring that there was "a great deal still to be done," Nujoma said his new government would concentrate on tackling the issues of education, unemployment, poverty and HIV/AIDS.
