China Guangdong Police Chief Confident of Macao Security

Chen Shaoji, director of the Provincial Public Security Bureau of Guangdong, expressed his confidence in the security of Macao during the period of the handover ceremony, due on December 20, and celebrations.

"The homecoming of Macao has drawn worldwide attention and is the aspiration of the Chinese people," Chen said, adding that anyone who attempts to make trouble would be "enemy of the people and the state,"and would be denounced by people from all circles.

Chen made the remarks after attending the 33rd regular meeting between top police officers from Guangdong and Macao. Chen and Manuel Soares Monge, secretary for security of the Portuguese Macao government, met Tuesday morning to sum up the experience of the Guangdong-Macao police cooperation this year.

They agreed that this year, especially in recent months, Guangdong and Macao police departments have made the biggest-ever achievements in security and border control. Special progress has been seen in cracking down on sneaking and organized crime.

The two sides have set up an increasingly effective mechanism of information exchange, it is learned.

During the meeting, the Macao side spoke highly of the efforts made by the Guangdong police in battling sneakers and criminal rings and disclosed that thanks to the crackdowns by Guangdong police, the number of illegal entries into Macao has declined markedly.

The two sides reached an agreement that during the handover period,Macao police would be responsible for security issues in the territory while Guangdong police would spare no efforts to support Macao police in their efforts.

A round-the-clock hot-line will be set up to ensure speedy and effective coordination between the two sides.
