World Pak Welcomes Pre-summit Commonwealth Position

Pakistan views positively the Commonwealth position on Pakistan reflected in the pre-summit press briefing in Durban, South Africa, by the Commonwealth secretary general, said a Foreign Office announcement on November 12.

In the light of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) mission's discussions in Islamabad last month, the Commonwealth Secretary General Emeka Anyaoku has stated that no further sanctions of any kind will be imposed against Pakistan and that CMAG would remain engaged with the Pakistan government.

The Pakistan government would constructively reciprocate the Commonwealth interest in continuing contacts with the latter, said the statement.

The CMAG mission comprising high-level diplomats from Canada, Malaysia, Barbados and Ghana paid a fact-finding visit to Pakistan late last month to assess the political situation after the coup on October 12.

Following a request received on behalf of the CMAG, the high commissioners of Canada and Malaysia in Pakistan were provided an opportunity to meet deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday evening.

The two high commissioners stayed with the former prime minister for about 20 minutes. They confirmed that he was in good health and was being well looked after, said the statement.
