During a meeting with Mahmoud Abbas, secretary-general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Hu said friendship between China and Palestine developed by three generations of Chinese leaders and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, has stood the test of time and witnessed enormous regional changes as well as progress. China highly appreciates the strategic stance of the PLO headed by Arafat in seeking solutions to disputes through peace talks and dialogue, and is delighted to see progress in re-building Palestine. Abbas said that Palestine is grateful for China's political, moral, and financial assistance over many years. Palestine feels proud of China's achievements, Abbas said. On behalf of the Palestinian people, he also extended congratulations to China on the return and steady development of Hong Kong as well as the coming return of Macao. He also hopes that Taiwan will be reunited with the mainland as soon as possible and realize the " one country, two systems" principle. On the latest development of the Palestine-Israel peace talks, Abbas said Palestine and Israel have signed the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement through arduous negotiations, and the Wye agreement is now being implemented. Although there is still disagreement on certain major issues, as long as both Palestine and Israel show sincerity and courage, obstacles can be overcome, and peace can be realized, he said. Abbas thanked China for its consistent support to the just cause of Palestine, expressing the hope China and the world community will continue to play an important role in promoting the peace process.
