Sports Asians Dominate World Wushu Championships

Asia, especially East and Southeast Asia, showed their superiority in the traditional Chinese martial arts in Hong Kong on November 4 when they collected all the six golds on the opening day of the world Wushu championships.

Powerhouse China, where Wushu was born, fielded only two athletes in Thursday's six events with an aim to give more winning chances to all the other teams. And to attract more people in the sport, the China has also limited each of their athlete to compete in just one event.

Chinese Qiu Huifang and Zhou Yunjian both made their debut in the world championships, displayed their delicate skills and mastery, winning the men's and women's Taiji boxing titles with 9. 58 and 9.55 points, respectively.

"I will keep training and try to defend the title in the next championships," said the 24-year-old Qiu, who represented China for the first time in the international stage.

Another powerhouse Vietnam captured two golds and two bronzes with Dam Thanh Xuan's win in women's Gunshu (stick drills) and Nguyen Phung Lan's victory in women's Nangun (southern stick).

Lo Yu Hang won a gold for host Hong Kong, China, who ranked second in medals in last championships in Rome, Italy. He won the men's Changquan (long boxing) with 9.38 points.

Four other players from Hong Kong, China, collected four silvers from six events held Thursday.

The title of men's Nandao (Southern sword) went to Malaysian Ho Ro Bin, who was awarded a total of 9.28 points.
