Thursday, November 04, 1999, updated at 11:18(GMT+8) World Taliban Demands UN Recognition for Cooperation A Taliban official has said that the movement could satisfy UN requests only after the world body recognized it, said a report on November 3. The report was made by Hamal Hossain, special rapporteur of the UN Commission on Human Rights. The report tells that Hossain visited Kabul on September 9-12 and met Taliban representatives there. He will submit the report to the UN General Assembly Thursday. Hossain said in the report that the Taliban authorities repeatedly raised the issues of recognition during his visit and urged that "recognition be extended to them." One of the Taliban representatives told Hossain it was the movement's understanding that the UN attached importance to three issues: elimination of narcotics, dealing with Saudi-born Osama bin Laden and education of women, the report said. "It was stated that if recognition was accorded, the Taliban authorities would be able to satisfy the United Nations with regard to each of these matters," the report said.
