Sci-Tech Ugandan Banks to Solve Y2K Problem During November

Uganda has asked all its banks and credit institutions to solve their Y2K problems during November 5-6, according to a press release by the country's central bank.

In the press release, the Bank of Uganda announced that the 5th and 6th of November will be holidays for banks and credit institutions as per the Financial Institutions Instrument of 1999.

"The holidays are necessary to allow these institutions to carry out a Y2K Drill, in which they will rehearse the date change to January 1, 2000. They will also test their contingency plans to mitigate any Y2K date change related risks," it said.

Earlier this year, Uganda established its Y2K Task Force to tackle the millennium bug. The country has made detailed plans to ensure the computers in the country will be Y2K compliant before the advent of the new century.

Uganda now has about 30 commercial banks which are mainly based in the capital city of Kampala. (Xinhua)
