Chinese President Meets Algerian PM

Visiting Chinese President Jiang Zemin said in Algiers Saturday afternoon that it is not a wise choice to undertake construction with doors closed under the current tendency of economic globlization.

"That is why Deng Xiaoping put forward the theory of building socialism with Chinese characteristics and the basic policy of reforms and opening to the outside world," Jiang said while meeting with Algerian Prime Minister Ismail Hamdani.

"According to this theory, China has decided to build socialist market economy," he added. "However, this market economy is built under the conditions of socialism, which is different from the economic model of the West."

Jiang stressed especially the importance of dealing correctly with the relationship between reforms, development and stability, saying that "A country must have a stable situation, only thus can it concentrate fully on economic construction."

Hamdani spoke highly of the economic and social development China has achieved so far and said that China's development is very important to Algeria because it needs to learn from the China's experience of construction and development.

He hopes that Jiang's current state visit to Algeria will further strengthen the friendly cooperation in all fields between the two countries.

This is the first visit to Algeria by the head of China.
