Chinese President Arrives in Algeria

Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in Algiers October 30 for a state visit to Algeria at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

This is the first visit by a Chinese head of state to the country.

Jiang and his wife Wang Yeping were greeted at the airport by Bouteflika, Speaker of the People's National Assembly Abdul Qadir Bin Saleh, President of the Council of the Nation Bachir Boumaza, Prime Minister Ismail Hamdani and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf.

Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Zheng Aquan and his wife were also at the airport to greet Jiang.

A welcoming ceremony was held at the airport. The two presidents inspected the guards of honor and national anthems of the two countries were played.

Although China and Algeria are far apart divided by mountains and oceans, the traditional friendship has linked the two countries closely, Jiang said in a written speech delivered at the airport.

China values its friendly relationship of cooperation with Algeria. Over the past 40 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations, bilateral relationship and cooperation in all fields have developed and been boosted under the guidance of the five principles of peaceful co-existence. Cooperation over international affairs has also been deepened, Jiang said.

At the cross of the century when the world polarization and economic globalization have kept developing, Jiang said, increasing mutual contacts, deepening understanding and strengthening solidarity and cooperation have important and realistic significance.

The Chinese president said that he is looking forward to exchanging views with Bouteflika and other Algerian friends over bilateral relations, major regional and international issues of common concern, so that to make joint contributions to promote full development of the bilateral relationship and to safeguard the world peace and push forward the progressive cause of the mankind.

Jiang's entourage arriving on the same special plane include Vice Premier Qian Qichen and his wife, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, Minister in charge of State Development Planning Commission Zeng Peiyan, Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Shi Guangsheng, Special Assistant Hua Jianmin, Deputy Director of the CPC Central Committee General Office You Xigui and Deputy Director of the Policy Research Office of the CPC Central Committee Wang Huning.

Algeria is the fifth leg of Jiang's six-nation tour of Europe, Africa and Asia. He has already paid state visits to Britain, France, Portugal and Morocco. He will also pay a visit to Saudi Arabia.
