Moore: All WTO Members Hope for China's Early Accession to WTO

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is not a truly global organization without China, said WTO Director-General Mike Moore in Geneva on October 25.

"China is an economic superpower. It is fully entitled to have a seat in WTO as it should," said Moore during his meeting with China's chief trade representative Long Yongtu. "This is the common wish of all WTO members."

This is the first time for the new WTO chief to meet the Chinese delegation for WTO accession negotiations since he took office last September.

Talking about WTO's ministerial conference scheduled for late November in Seattle, Moore said that it would be a splendid day for both the multilateral trading system and all the members of WTO if it could be announced at the Seattle meeting that China had concluded talks for its accession to WTO.

Long, also vice minister of foreign trade, stressed that China has been holding the positive approach to its WTO accession from the very beginning.

He told Moore that China began a new round of bilateral talks with the European Union Monday in Geneva and is ready to hold further talks with the United States at a proper time.

Long said that China will commit itself to the conclusion of all bilateral talks before WTO's Seattle conference in order to join the organization as early as possible on a basis of balanced rights and duties. (Xinhua)
