Saudi King Meets Pakistani Chief Executive
Saudi King Fahd Ibn Abdul-Aziz held talks on October 25 with visiting Pakistani Chief Executive Pervez Musharraf on ways of cementing bilateral ties.
This is General Musharraf's first foreign trip since he toppled the government of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a peaceful military coup on October 12, the Kuwait News Agency reported.
Diplomatic sources in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, said earlier that Musharraf, who is on a two-nation tour, will brief Saudi officials on the conditions in his country over the past two weeks and the reasons that led to the military coup.
He will also assure Riyadh of his resolve to maintain stability and security, and boost prosperity in Pakistan, the sources said.
They said that the fact that the new Pakistani leader chose Saudi Arabia as the first foreign state to visit reflected the weight of the Gulf kingdom in the Islamic world.
General Musharraf received the Saudi ambassador to Islamabad shortly after the coup.
Saudi Arabia had voiced deep concern over the situation in Pakistan after the coup, expressing hope that "reason" would prevail in order to preserve Pakistan's security and prosperity.
Musharraf arrived in Riyadh earlier in the day on a two-day visit and he will travel on to the United Arab Emirates later. (Xinhua)
