Seminar Stresses Importance of Ethnic Groups Work

A seminar on issues facing China's ethnic groups was held in Beijing on October 26, with speakers urging all the related government departments to give more priority to the matter.

Wang Zhaoguo, Vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and head of the United Front Work Department of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, said at the seminar that the importance of the ethnic groups work has been highlighted in the modern world.

"Ethnic groups work has much to do with China's economic development, social stability, border safety and the reunification of the nation," he said.

Earlier, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council sponsored a conference on ethnic work at which both President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji made important speeches.

"Decisions and instructions from the conference must be studied and carried out," Wang said.

He also stressed the importance of ethnic solidarity, social stability and national unification.

Today's seminar was hosted by Li Dezhu, Minister of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, and attended by some 300 high-ranking officials and representatives from all circles in the capital. (Xinhua)
