China Needs A High-Caliber Judge Team: Senior Official

A senior Chinese official said on October 26 that a high-caliber team of judges needs to be formed if fairness in the judiciary is to become a widespread reality.

Luo Gan, member of the political bureau of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Central Committee and secretary of the Central Political Science and Law Committee, made the remark while addressing 166 presidents of China's Intermediate People's Courts who are currently enrolled in professional training courses in Beijing.

Within the next three years, China plans to provide training courses to judges at the deputy-presiding level at its Intermediate People's Courts or above, in an effort to improve the professional capabilities of the country's judges.

Luo pointed out that people's courts at all levels should work to safeguard judicial fairness, which is at the heart of the socialist democratic and legal system and vital for the country's reform, development and stability.

He stressed that people's courts across China should firmly oppose and fight against local self-interest.

Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court, also made a speech, saying that a fair, clean and highly-efficient panel of judges is the guarantee for judicial fairness, which is the basic requirement of both the Party and the people. (Xinhua)
