China Marks 110th Anniversary of Geologist's Birthday

The Ministry of Land and Resources, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Association for Science and Technology held a meeting in Beijing on October 26 marking the 110th Anniversary of the birthday of Li Siguang, founder of China's modern geology research and a pioneer of geological studies in new China.

Presentation of the Sixth Li Siguang Geological Science Awards and a publication ceremony for "The Geology of China (Expanded Edition)" which was first written by Li, were part of the event.

Premier Zhu Rongji extended congratulations to the award winners and the publication of the book.

Zhu said that the study of geology, a basic science, should always be strengthened. He urged the geologists across the country to carry on Li's work ethic and innovative spirit, and make new contributions to the socialist modernization cause.

To learn from Li is to carry forward his spirit of scientific innovation, said Vice-premier Wen Jiabao at the occasion.

He said that such an attitude will help promote scientific development in today's China and make the country a more powerful international competitor.

Li has set a good example for Chinese scientists, Wen said, adding that Li is one of the Chinese geologists who did the most field experimentation and prospecting.

Wen presented the Sixth Li Siguang Geological Science Awards to 17 geologists. Some 83 geologists have won the award since it was established in 1989.

"The Geology of China" was published in Britain in 1939, introducing to the west for the first time the geological formations in China. It has been published in several languages including English, Russian and Chinese. (Xinhua)
