NPC Chairman Meets Namibian Visitor

Li Peng, chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, met in Beijing on October 27 with Zephania Kameeta, deputy speaker of the Parliament of Namibia.

Li said that in their struggles against colonialism, the Chinese and Namibian people have forged a solid friendship which now is being promoted on the new basis. And in the nine years since China and Namibia forged diplomatic ties, the two countries have cooperated successfully in all fields.

He said that China and Namibia, both developing countries, have common interests, and support each other in dealing with the international issues.

"We appreciate the Namibian government's stance on the 'one China' policy and its support for China's reunification cause and on major international issues," Li said. He added that Chinese people value their traditional friendship with the Namibians, and would like to work with them to bring the mutual trust and sincere friendship into the next century.

Li said that the economic globalization has created both opportunities and challenges for the developing countries, so they should make the most of the opportunities, and protect themselves as well.

Li pointed out that Zephania Kameeta's visit will further the cooperation of the parliaments between the two countries, and the Chinese NPC is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Namibian Parliament, and contributes to the bilateral friendly cooperation.

Zephania Kameeta said that his visit is meant to promote the existing friendship between the two countries and parliaments.

He spoke highly of China's achievements in developing its economy and helping people out of poverty, and said that the policies the Chinese government is following conforms to the situation and Chinese people's interests.

Namibia will firmly support the Chinese government's peaceful reunification policy, he added. (Xinhua)
