Jiang also elaborated on the importance of cooperation in high and new technology, hoping that the two countries will explore new channels and fields in this aspect. Chirac said he fully agreed with Jiang's views. Jiang said that both China and France are countries with a long history of civilization and have the tradition of safeguarding national independence. As members of the United Nations Security Council, he said, China and France have shouldered important responsibilities over international affairs and the economies of the two countries are highly complementary.
