Chinese College Students Volunteer To Work In Poverty-Stricken Area

����Some graduates of Chinese universities have volunteered to assist with education in Gansu Province in northwest China.

����Some 100 graduates of 22 universities are taking part in a nationwide education and poverty-relief program in five provinces including Gansu.

����About 20 have worked for more than a month in Gansu's Yuzhong County and have become an important part of the local schools, making full use of their professional background.

����Wang Lang of Beijing Normal University has seen how the area lags behind the rest of China in education and wants to try to be an information envoy to bring knowledge from eastern parts of the country.

����China faces serious challenges in providing better education for its 1.2 billion people and especially for rural and impoverished people. In addition to providing more financial support, the Chinese government has been asking for volunteers to give a hand.

����China now has more than 6,600 community volunteer groups with 10 million volunteers working in education, environmental protection, poverty reduction, and other areas.
