SSC Invites Taiwan Seismological Experts

The Seismological Society of China (SSC) sent a message on October 15 to Taiwan seismologists inviting them to the mainland to work together on issues of reconstruction.

Soon after the massive earth quake that jolted Taiwan on September 21, seismologists on the mainland contacted officials and experts at Taiwan seismological organization expressing their sympathy and wish to help with on-the-spot relief work.

Some experts in Taiwan also said that they would like to welcome experts from the mainland and help with procedures for them going to Taiwan. But for various reasons, they haven't made the trip yet.

An official with the SSC said, "Although 20 days have passed since the disastrous quake, seismological experts on the mainland are still concerned about the issue and would like to provide any possible help."

The emergency relief work has now been tentatively completed, and the work of reconstruction is now on the agenda, he added.

The message sent on October 15 said, "The massive earthquake that hit Taiwan September 21 has been a concern of mainland compatriots over the pass days. Now the quake-stricken areas are facing the problem of reconstruction. Having undergone several devastating earthquakes including the Tangshan quake of 1976, we have accumulated reconstruction experiences, and our reconstruction and related scientific research are notable.

"We would like to work together with Taiwan fellow experts to reconstruct the quake-stricken areas. And we are ready to invite them to the mainland to carry out cooperative research." (Xinhua)
