Portuguese PM to Take Over Presidency of Socialist International
Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres was
nominated by the presidium of the Socialist International (IS) on October 17 as the only
candidate to replace former French Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy as the next IS president.
The election of the president will be held during the
Congress of Socialist International from November 8 to 10 in Paris, said Mauroy, who did
not seek his re-nomination as IS president.
Mauroy also said that the IS congress will issue a
``Declaration of Paris'' which will be focused on globalization of economy.
The IS presidium consists of about 30 members including
heads of Socialist party or Social-Democratic party and heads of government.
