Macao-Zhuhai Bridge to Be Completed in November
The construction of a bridge linking Macao with the
neighboring Zhuhai City is well under way and will be completed by the end of November,
the Macao Daily News reported.
The bridge, which is named Lotus Flower Bridge, and
related border checking facilities will be put into use before December 20 when China
resumes the exercise of sovereignty over Macao.
The Lotus Flower Bridge will act as a second land
passage between Macao and the inland areas of China besides the Gongbei Customs, which now
serves as the only passageway between Macao and the inland areas and is often crowded with
mounting personnel and cargo exchanges.
Considering the fact that vehicles run along the left
side of the road in Macao while those in Zhuhai run along the right side, a bridge
approach will be able to help vehicles change driving lanes when they pass through the
main bridge.
The bridge will have a total length of 1,716 meters
with six lanes. Construction of the bridge started in June of 1998 with joint funding by
the governments of Macao and Zhuhai. (Xinhua)
