Nankai University Celebrates 80th Anniversary
Around ten thousand alumni gathered at Nankai University in northern China city of Tianjin today to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the university's founding.
Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC), sent a congratulatory letter for the event in which he said he hopes that all faculty members will work hard to build the university into one of the best in the world.
Wu Jieping, vice-chairman of the Ninth NPC Standing Committee, together with presidents, scholars, and specialists from over 100 universities both at home and abroad, attended the ceremonial activities.
Nankai University was established by educators Yan Fansun and Zhang Boling, and the school is now considered a model among modern colleges.
In the past 80 years it has nurtured some 100,000 graduates in many fields, among whom are Zhou Enlai, late Chinese premier, Chen Xingshen, a renowned Chinese mathematician, Wu Ta-you, a famous physicist, and Cao Yu, an eminent playwright.
The university now has 14 schools, 43 departments, more than 70 research institutions and centers, 46 doctorate programs and 11 programs for other postgraduates, and over 1,000 professors, associate professors, and some 20,000 students. (Xinhua)
