Chinese Vice Premier Meets Visiting Overseas Chinese Scholars
Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing on September 29 reaffirmed state policies which encourage overseas Chinese scholars to make contributions to national development.
He said that Chinese people who study abroad and return to China to work will continue to get support from governments at all levels, and that those who remain overseas will also be encouraged to serve the country in various ways.
The vice premier made the remarks while meeting with 100 overseas Chinese scholars with Ph.D.s who are visiting China to study the country's agricultural and high-tech development.
Overseas Chinese scientists can play a significant role in boosting academic exchanges between Chinese and overseas scholars, and can push forward the modernization drive of China, Li stressed.
He asked government organizations, including the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, to provide better services for them, such as communicating opinions and suggestions from the scholars more efficiently.
At the invitation of the office, the scholars have carried out studies and academic activities in 18 Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities since mid-September. They will also attend ceremonies for the 50th anniversary of the People 's Republic of China. (Xinhua)
