President Clinton Delivers Greeting to Chinese Americans

US President Bill Clinton delivered a warm greeting on September 24 to Chinese Americans throughout the United States as they prepare to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

In a letter to the Chinese Americans in Southern California, the president praised the contributions made to the world by the people and culture of China.

This special occasion -- celebration of the Chinese National Day-- "reminds us of how much the people and culture of China have contributed to the world and how, as vital members of the global community, the Chinese people continue to build on their rich past to contribute to a brighter future," he wrote.

Clinton said American life has been continually renewed and enriched by the many different people, including the Chinese, who have chosen to make the US their country and home and become " our fellow citizens."

"Each (of them) has brought a part of his or her own heritage, which over time has become part of our common heritage," he explained. "As we seek to become a more united people, we must not forget our roots, for they remind us of who we are and of what we have to share with others."

The US president praised in particular the Chinese Americans who have made contributions to the United States.

"You can be proud of your roots and of the many contributions Chinese Americans have made to our national life. This anniversary observance offers a welcome opportunity to rejoice in the diversity that is America's greatest strength and to celebrate the spirit of community that binds us together as one nation," he said.

This is the second letter from the White House to Chinese Americans in Southern California, who are engaged in a variety of activities, celebrating the 50th Chinese National Day on October 1. The first letter came earlier this month to wish success for a grand gathering in Pasadena Civil Auditorium, where Chinese artists were giving performances to a local Chinese community in advance of the Chinese National Day.

Several congressmen and senators, as well as California Governor Gray Davis, and Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riodan, also wrote to the Chinese Americans in Southern California to mark the memorable occasion. (Xinhua)
