China Urges to Forge Fair, Equitable New International Economic Order

The Steady and sound growth of the world economy and the reduction of the North-South disparity hinge on the establishment of a fair and equitable new international economic order, China stressed in United Nations on September 24.

Addressing the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77, Chinese delegate Wang Guangya said at the time when the new millennium is drawing, the international community should carefully review the past experience and lessons, explore effective strategies and ways for the developing countries to attain development, safeguard their rights and interests.

As regards the push for the establishment of such a fair and equitable new international economic order, the Chinese delegate made the following suggestions:

First, actively cope with the challenges of economic globalization by the developing countries.

Second, actively participate in the formulation of the rules of the multilateral game.

Third, strengthen South-South cooperation and promote North-South cooperation.

Fourth, make it possible for the UN to play a bigger role.

The Chinese delegate said as a member of the South, China views the strengthening and development of solidarity and cooperation with other developing countries as an important part of its independent foreign policy of peace.

Though not a member of the Group of 77, China had attached great importance to cooperating with the group in multilateral economic and other fields, he said. (Xinhua)
