President Jiang Welcomes Prosecutors to Attend Beijing Conference

Chinese President Jiang Zemin has extended a warm written welcome to delegates planning to attend the forthcoming 4th annual conference and general assembly of the International Association of Prosecutors, Xinhua learned on September 2.

"On behalf of the government of the People's Republic of China and myself, I extend my warm welcome" to prosecutors from all over the world, Jiang wrote.

"We are about to bid farewell to the 20th century and brace ourselves for a new millennium. At the same time, with opportunities and challenges co-existing, every nation in the world attaches great importance to economic development, social stability and the improvement of living standards for its citizens, " Jiang said.

Guaranteeing the healthy development of national economies and society at large by legal means has become a common task for all, and it is of great significance for the International Association of Prosecutors who have chosen "fraud and corruption" as themes for this conference, Jiang noted.

He wrote that the Chinese people have transformed the landscape of their country with their diligence and intelligence under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party over the past 50 years.

"And especially in the past 20 years, China has achieved success acclaimed across the world for its reform and opening policy, as well as making great progress in the construction of a democratic legal system," Jiang said.

"Administering state affairs in accordance with the law and building a socialist country with the rule of law has become the fundamental principle of China," Jiang wrote, stressing that the Chinese people are struggling to build a strong, democratic, civilized and modernized socialist country.

He said he expected delegates to the meeting to make new contributions to promoting international exchanges and cooperation in prosecution work by exchanging ideas and increasing mutual understanding and friendship.
