Taiwan Authorities Urged to Stop splitting China
People's Daily published a commentary today criticizing Lee Teng-hui for his "two states" statement.
The article says that Lee has gone too far along the road of splitting the motherland. People of insight in Taiwan should have a clear mind on the cross-Straits situation, and the article urges them to join the mainland in stoutly interdicting the risky moves of Lee and his followers.
Lee, fearing that cross-Straits relations will grow in a way conducive to the reunification of the motherland, never fails to put sand in the wheels whenever cross-Straits relations tend toward relaxation and development, says the article.
On July 9, Lee redefined cross-Straits relations as "state-to-state or at least special state-to-state relations" while being interviewed by a radio station in Germany.
The article says that Lee's open remarks have totally unmasked his scheme to separate the motherland, and his erroneous judgment of the situation.
Lee was taking a political risk by jeopardizing the security and happiness of the 21 million people living in Taiwan, using foreign anti-China forces as the stepping stone.
By doing this, Lee has stigmatized the entire Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots, as enemies, the article notes.
China's reunification is the goal and historical mission toward which the Chinese people have been struggling for more than a century, and any provocation against it is doomed to failure.
The article points out that Lee's "two-state" remark, an attempt to split Taiwan from China's sovereignty and territory, completely denies the "one China" principle.
"Cross-Straits relations would deteriorate if this attempt prevailed," said the article, "peace across the Straits would no longer exist, and China's approach to peaceful reunification would finally be ruined."
Taiwan compatriots would be the victims suffering most if Lee were allowed to continue walking along this dangerous way, the article says, warning that the only way out for the Taiwan authorities is to "rein in at the edge of precipice". (Xinhua)
