"One China" Policy Reiterated Over the World

* President Bill Clinton reiterated the US one-China policy on June 21 as Lee Teng-hui's redefinition of the cross-strait relationship was refuted on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

"Our policy is clear. We favor the one-China policy. We favor the cross-Straits dialogues," Clinton told a White House press conference.

* France reaffirmed on July 21 its one China policy it has adopted since 1964, the year when France established diplomatic relations with China.

``France recognizes the existence of only one China, with which it established diplomatic relations in 1964,'' said a spokesman of the French Foreign Ministry.

The spokesman said that France calls on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits to solve their problem through direct dialogue to ensure the prosperity and stability in the region.

* South Korea has always respected the "one China" principle since it established diplomatic relations with China in August 1992, the Foreign and Trade Ministry said on July 22.

This position remains unchanged, said the ministry.

It voiced concern over the tensions arising recently between China's mainland and Taiwan after Lee Teng-hui, leader of the Taiwanese authorities, said that cross-Straits relations should be defined as "state-to-state, or at least special state-to-state relations."

South Korea hoped that the Taiwan issue can be solved through dialogue between the two sides.

* Latin American countries have reiterated their "One China" policy, criticizing the recent separatist remarks by Taiwan's Lee Teng-hui.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Marcos Galvao said that Brazil has been recognizing the government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate one representing the whole China ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China in 1974.

"Taiwan is an inalienable part of the People's Republic of China," he said.

Galvao said Lee Teng-hui's recent remarks that relations between Taiwan and China were on a "state-to-state" basis will introduce a negative element to the cross-Straits relations.

The spokesman said Lee's remarks mean that Taiwan authorities do not follow the principle of "One China" but "One China and One Taiwan" or "Two Chinas."

The Venezuelan government on July 21 also reaffirmed its position that there exists only one China, which is the People's Republic of China.

The Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Relations, in a press release, said the principle of "One country, two systems" is of great importance to the reunification of China.

Chile's Foreign Minister Juan Gabriel Valdes on Wednesday told Xinhua that Chile maintains its clear policy toward China, recognizing only the People's Republic of China. And "we maintain our invariable friendship with the People's Republic of China." (Xinhua)
