Xinhua Commentator Says Dividing Motherland Is Historical Sin

Lee Teng-hui has made himself a sinner in history by attempting to split the motherland when he redefined the cross-Straits relations as "state-to-state", according to a Xinhua commentator.

Lee gradually tore off his camouflage and changed his policy towards the mainland from the "one China" principle. According to reports from Taiwan, on July 9, he said that the cross-Straits relations should be "state-to-state or at least special state-to- state relations".

The Xinhua commentator says that Lee was trying to take advantage of the current situation in the United States, where there has been a series of anti-China farces and he deliberately chose a German radio station to speak out, hinting that the cross-Straits relations were like the two Germanys.

But Lee's efforts are fruitless, the commentator says, because relations across the Taiwan Straits have never been like those of the two Germanys. His devisive remarks also exposed his attempt to impose his influence on Taiwan's political situation when he leaves office next year.

The cross-Straits relations climate has improved since last year with the joint effort of the Chinese everywhere, it says, adding Taiwan compatriots have expressed the hope that cross- Straits dialogues can continue and they are looking forward to Wang Daohan's visit to Taiwan later this year.

The progress in cross-Straits relations runs against Lee's original idea, the commentator noted. his remark was designed to further undermine the 'one-China' principle -- the foundation for the cross-Straits contacts, dialogues and negotiations -- and to wreck the peaceful reunification of the motherland.

There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country, it goes on, stressing that separation of China's territorial integrity and sovereignty is not allowed.

There is no way out for Lee's divisiveness and he is doomed to failure. The commentator cautions Lee's followers to consider the long-term interests of the Taiwan compatriots. (Xinhua)
