Brazil Beat Mexico 2-0 in Copa America Semi-final
BUENOS ARIES, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Defending champion Brazil overcame Mexico 2-0 to reach their third successive Copa America soccer final on Wednesday.
Striker Amoroso and midfielder Rivaldo's scores in the first half helped the World Cup runners-up win over uninspired opponents comfortably in their semi-final.
Though Mexico won a dozen corners and several free kicks in dangerous positions, none of them seriously threatened Brazil goalkeeper Dida.
Brazil, who will meet Uruguay in the final, took the lead in the 25th minute. Emerson Ferreira split the Mexican defense and released Ze Roberto on the left, his cross hit a defender and sped into the path of Rivaldo. Rivaldo's header rebounded against the post and Amoroso fired home the rebound.
Three minutes before the break, after playing a one-two with Ronaldo, Rivaldo scored the second goal with a left foot shot from outside the penalty area.
Ronaldo, booked in the quarter-final win over Argentina, was substituted late in the game by Ronaldo Assis.
As in their first round matches with Brazil and Chile and their quarter-final against Peru, Mexico improved significantly after the halftime but this time they never looked dangerous. (Xinhua)
