Chinese Official Says US Needs To Make Cause Of Embassy Bombing Clear

Zhao Qizheng, the head of the State Council's Information Office, Thursday said the best thing that the US government could do would be to earnestly make clear the cause of the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia.

Zhao made the remarks in response to a Cable News Network (CNN) correspondent at a press conference to refute the "Cox Report", in Beijing Thursday.

Chinese readers have noticed the fact that there was no substantial investigation into the matter and that the United States rushed to declare that the bombing was a mistake because of the use of outdated maps, he said, as explained by a special envoy of the US President, Thomas Pickering, who said that all three maps were outdated.

Pickering explained that, in addition to the use of outdated maps, a series of other errors contributed to the mistake, Zhao said. But, there was little probability of this, he said.

To be using three wrong maps together is like assuming that three dice would land on the same number simultaneously, Zhao said, adding that this was something like a one-two-hundred-and- sixteenth probability.

Considering other scores of "errors", he said, the probability of such a case is almost zero.

Asked whether he believed there was any link between the "Cox Report" and the Chinese Embassy bombing, Zhao said that he did not believe that there was any connection. But at least the report showed that Cox has no good will for China, he said. (Xinhua)
