China, Portugal Agree on Macao Transfer Media Arrangements

China and Portugal reached agreement in Lisbon Wednesday on media arrangements for the transfer ceremony of Macao.

A release issued by the Sino-Portuguese Joint Liaison Group said that the two sides deem the transfer ceremony as an important event jointly held by the government of the People's Republic of China and the government of the Republic of Portugal and welcome journalists of media institutions from all over the world to cover the ceremony.

The two sides have decided to entrust the Macao government with processing journalists' applications for covering the ceremony and handling matters relating to media coverage in accordance with internationally accepted practices.

According to the arrangements, media organizations interested in covering the ceremony should submit applications along with the personal particulars of their representatives to the Macao government through the Ceremony's Coordination Office before October 29, 1999. The Coordination Office will start to distribute application forms on August 2, 1999, the notice said.

The two sides also decided to establish a press and broadcast center to facilitate media coverage of the ceremony and welcome all media organizations to use the center.

Macao from zero hour of December 20 this year will return to China.
