Japan Sticks to Its Stand on Taiwan
ĦĦĦĦJapan will not change its policy on the issue of China's Taiwan, said Sadaaki Numata, a spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a news conference on July 13.
ĦĦĦĦ When asked for views on Lee Teng-hui's allegations, Numata said that Japan, as PM Keizo Obuchi had promised during his recent visit to China, would not change its current policy on Taiwan. Generally speaking, the policy reads as follows: First, Japan sticks to its stand defined in the Sino-Japan Joint Declaration in 1972, that is, Japan fully understands and respects China's position that Taiwan is an integral part of the People's Republic of China. Second, Japan maintains only non-governmental relations with Taiwan. Third, Japan hopes to see a cross-strait dialogue to solve the Taiwan issue peacefully.
