US Reaffirms "One China" Policy
The United States reaffirmed on July 12 that its position on Taiwan is unchanged and it will continue to follow the "one China" policy.
James Foley, deputy spokesman for the State Department, made the remarks at a news briefing in response to allegations by Taiwan's Lee Teng-hui on July 9 that the cross-strait relations should be "state-to-state" or at least "special state-to-state relations".
"Our policy is unchanged," Foley said, "Our 'one China' policy is long-standing and certainly well known."
"The U.S. position on Taiwan's future is also clear. We believe that it is a matter for the Chinese people, on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, to resolve," he said.
The United States hopes both sides of the straits to "engage in meaningful, substantive dialogue," he said.
Meanwhile, P.J. Crowley, a spokesman for the National Security Council, said on Monday that America's main interest lies in seeing a cross-strait dialogue so that issues between them can be resolved by peaceful means. (Xinhua)
