Chinese President Meets with Romanian Guest

President Jiang Zemin met in Beijing July 13 with Ion Diaconescu, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament.

Jiang recalled his state visit to Romania in 1996, and said he was deeply impressed by the warm hospitality he received there. He also referred to Romanian President Emil Constantinescu's visit to China in 1997, during which the two leaders held fruitful talks in a candid and cordial atmosphere.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries, and their friendship over half a century has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the two peoples, Jiang said.

He added that bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, and cultural fields have also expanded, and stressed this is not only the common wish of the leaders of both countries, but also the unanimous aspiration of the two peoples.

Diaconescu, who is also chairman of the Romanian National Peasants' Party, said the current visit, first ever for him, to China has left him with a deep impression.

He said China is a friend of Romania, and although political changes have taken place in Romania in recent years, its friendly policy toward China remains intact. Romania is eager to continue its friendship with China, which has been fostered through decades of effort, and to strengthen bilateral cooperation and mutual support in international affairs.
