35th OAU Summit Opens in Algerian Capital

Incumbent Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and President of Burkina Faso Blaise Compaore declared the opening of the 35th summit of the organization in the Palace of Nations in Algers on July 12 morning.

Compaore said that this OAU summit, the last in the 20th Century, is of paramount importance to the future of the largest African organization and the continent as a whole.

Present at the summit are state heads and government leaders from over 40 African countries and representatives from many international organizations.

The African leaders are expected to seek for home-grown solutions to the various conflicts which have been hindering the economic and social development in Africa.

They also have to address the daunting challenges lying ahead and to shape the future for the continent.

The summit is held once a year to review the work the OAU has done in the previous year and makes plans for the next year. The last summit was held in Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou last June.

The OAU was founded on June 25, 1963 when it had only 32 members. Now it has 53 member states. (Xinhua)
