Chinese Official Says He's "Shocked" at Lee Teng-hui's Separatist Remarks
����Wang Daohan, President of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), said in Shanghai July 12 that he is shocked by Taiwan's redefinition of the cross-Straits talks as "bilateral talks between two states".
����The new terminology undermines the foundation for ARATS's contacts, exchanges and dialogs with Taiwan's Strait Exchange Foundation (SEF), he said. He is demanding a clarification from his counterpart Koo Chen-fu, SEF's chairman.
����Lee Teng-hui of Taiwan has been reported as saying on July 9 that the cross-Straits relations should be defined as "state-to-state relations" and, on July 10, Koo echoed the remarks by saying that the two sides of the Taiwan Straits are "two independent political entities" and that the cross-Straits talks are " bilateral talks between two states".
����In an interview with Xinhua, Wang said that the "one China" principle has been the foundation for the cross-Straits relations and it has been also the foundation for the contacts, dialogs, and negotiations between the ARATS and the SEF.
����Wang said the ARATS will resolutely guard the "one China" principle and continue to promote cross-Straits relations together with the SEF under that principle for the peaceful reunification of the motherland. (Xinhua)
