Chinese Official Says He's "Shocked" at Lee Teng-hui's Separatist Remarks
Wang Daohan, President of Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), said in Shanghai July 12 that he is shocked by Taiwan's redefinition of the cross-Straits talks as "bilateral talks between two states".
The new terminology undermines the foundation for ARATS's contacts, exchanges and dialogs with Taiwan's Strait Exchange Foundation (SEF), he said. He is demanding a clarification from his counterpart Koo Chen-fu, SEF's chairman.
Lee Teng-hui of Taiwan has been reported as saying on July 9 that the cross-Straits relations should be defined as "state-to-state relations" and, on July 10, Koo echoed the remarks by saying that the two sides of the Taiwan Straits are "two independent political entities" and that the cross-Straits talks are " bilateral talks between two states".
In an interview with Xinhua, Wang said that the "one China" principle has been the foundation for the cross-Straits relations and it has been also the foundation for the contacts, dialogs, and negotiations between the ARATS and the SEF.
Wang said the ARATS will resolutely guard the "one China" principle and continue to promote cross-Straits relations together with the SEF under that principle for the peaceful reunification of the motherland. (Xinhua)
