Chinese Premier Congratulates OAU Session
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji sent a congratulatory telegram to the 35th ordinary session of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) Assembly of heads of state and government, which starts in Algiers on Monday. The text of the cable runs as follows:
On the occasion of the convocation of the 35th Ordinary Session of the OAU Assembly of Heads of State and Government and the Third Ordinary Session of the African Economic Community, I wish to extend, on behalf of the Chinese government and people, our warm congratulations to the Sessions.
Over the past 36 years, the OAU has made outstanding contribution to the struggle for national independence in Africa, the promotion of concerted efforts by African countries to safeguard peace and stability on the continent, and the advancement of regional cooperation and economic development. Meanwhile, it has actively participated in international affairs and worked hard to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of African nations. As a result, Africa has become an important force in the international arena. At this historical juncture when mankind is entering a new millennium, African countries, summing up their experience, are working actively to respond to the opportunities and challenges brought about by the changes in the international situation. They have made unremitting efforts and constant progress in exploring ways of development suited to their respective national conditions so as to attain the fundamental goal of national rejuvenation. Although there are still many difficulties and problems facing Africa, we always believe that the African continent is a promising continent. It will be able to surmount difficulties and enter the new century with a new look as long as African countries can achieve stability, spare no efforts in getting stronger, and strengthen solidarity and coordination among themselves, and get sincere assistance from the international community.
The Chinese government has all along attached importance to Africa. It is always part and parcel of China's independent foreign policy of peace to enhance our solidarity and cooperation with the vast number of developing countries, including those in Africa. China shares extensive common interests with Africa. The great China-Africa friendship, which has grown through the long years of common struggle, has withstood the test of time and vicissitudes in the world, and it has grown stronger and developed further in the new situation. Being the largest developing country, China wishes to increase consultation with Africa to enhance mutual understanding, expand consensus, promote cooperation and work together to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries. China is ready to build a 21st-century-oriented friendly partnership with Africa of long-term stability and all-round cooperation.
I wish the meetings a complete success. (Xinhua)
