China's Yuan Hua Takes First Judo Title at Universiade

Chinese Yuan Hua took the first judo title when she triumphed in the women's over 78-kg category of the judo competitions which started in Beijing on July 8 afternoon at the 20th World University Games.

The 25-year-old Chinese judoka defeated Russian T. Dongouzachvi by "ippon" as the four-minute final clicked towards its ending at the Principes de Espana, with the bronze medals even split by Cuban Beltran Daima and Japanese Shintani Midori.

"I cared nothing of defense as I took the initiatives throughout the final," said Yuan Hua, who started her training at the age of 15 and won her debutant title in the world junior championship in 1992 in Argentina.

"The gold medal is surely within my expectation because I beat her in the world military championships last August in St. Petersburg," said the native of Liaoning province and Asian Games champion last December in Bangkok.

"I have my advantages of quick moves despite a little bit shorter than the Russian," explained the Chinese who ranked third in the 1997 world championships.

En route to her victory, Yuan Hua floored her three previous opponents -- Briton Callende Simone, Dutch Harte Francoise and South Korean Lee Hyung-kyung -- all by ippon within one minute.

"She has displayed her level of competitiveness as she prepares well for the Universiade despite an injury to her left knee suffered some 20 days ago," said Chinese coach Fu Guoyi.

Of the three other titles taken away on Thursday, Frenchwoman Lebrun Celine outpowered Romanian Richter Simona in the women's 78- kg category with the bronze medal being shared by Spanish San Miguel Esther and Japanese Matsuzaki Mizuho.

The men's over 100-kg open category was won by Japanese Munet Yasuyuki who defeated Dutchman Van Der Geest Dennis by ippon, while Cuban Sanchez Vladimir and South Korean Kang Byung-Gin shared the bronze medal.

The men's 100-kg title went to Portugal's Soares Pedro who beat Ukrainian Gorbokon Igor, with the bronze medal shared by Russian Stepkin Iouri and Georgian Jikurauli Iveri. (Xinhua)
