Pak Cabinet Supports PM's Diplomatic Initiative

The Pakistan Federal Cabinet which on July 10 expressed full confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his bold and principled initiative for peace.

According to a press release issued after the meeting, Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Shamshad Ahmed had briefed the Cabinet on Sharif's recent visits to Washington, London and China as part of peace initiatives to defuse the situation.

It expressed satisfaction on the joint statement issued after Sharif's meeting with U.S. President Bill Clinton in Washington on July 4.

The Pakistani government believed that the joint statement had included the main elements of Pakistan's position on the latest crisis in Kargil sector in the disputed Kashmir area.

The Cabinet affirmed that the joint statement preserves, promotes and protects Pakistan's vital interests, specially the position on Kashmir issue and is also a major step towards peace in the region.

It noted that the Kashmir Mujahideen (freedom fighters) had responded positively to the appeal of the Pakistani government to help resolve the current Kargil situation.

The international community must pay attention to the Kashmir issue so that the core issue retarding peace in South Asia is resolved amicably, said the press release.

The Cabinet underlined Pakistan's principled policy of "providing moral, diplomatic and political support to the freedom struggle of the peace of Jammu and Kashmir."

The Defense Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) met Friday and decided to appeal to the Mujahideen to "help resolve the Kargil situation".

Soon after the DCC meeting, Prime Minister Sharif met with a delegation of Mujahideen leaders and formally appealed to them to vacate the posts they had occupied in the Kargil sector to help defusing the two-month-long tension in Kashmir. (Xinhua)
