High-Yield Quality Rice Strains Cultivated in Hunnan Province

For years it seems contradictory for people to have both quality and quantity achieved in rice production. But a solution has come to be found to the problem by Chinese agriculturists in Hunnan province headed by Yuan Longping, a renowned rice expert in China.

A series of new early hybrid rice strains have been cultivated in Hunnan Provincial Academy of Agricultural Science after a decade of devoted research effort made by agricultural scientists headed by Mr. Yuan. The maturing period of new rice strains is shorter than those of old locally used, with a per mu yield averaging over 450kg. With good transparency, fine in physique, good to eat, the new rice strains give high lodging, disease and pest resistance

Intensive seeding production has already been under way. The new rice strains will be popularized over a large area next year.

In addition, much has been achieved in cultivation of a super hybrid rice strain known as Chaotai rice. Three new hybrid rice strains cultivated have by their taste and outlook exceeded that of the Thai rice strain.

"For a quite long time people used to think that quality excludes quantity in rice production. But I'd like to say now that high rice yields are no longer contradictory with achieving greater quantities of rice," Mr. Yuan said.
