Six Million Laid-off Registered in Reemployment Centers
The total number of the laid-off workers in nationwide enterprises (Tibet excluded) was 8.921million in 1998, a 2.589 million less than the year before, which means 22.5 percent lower, according to the 1998 statistic bulletin released by the Ministry of Labor & Social Security and the State Statistics Bureau.
In 1998, some 6.039 million SOE layoffs entered reemployment service centers and 93.2 percent of them received living allowances.
There were 699.57 million persons employed in 1998, according to the bulletin.
