Diving Queen Back to Springboard
When Fu Mingxia is seen back in the diving field, there is something that has been found new in her. Her figure is trimmed to be as slim and slander as she was in the Atlanta Olympic Games. Sweat smiles can be seen playing on her face as before. But there is no naivety any more. Tenderness and tranquility that feature a mature woman smell around her.
"I am now gradually retrieving the sense of competitiveness in contest", said Fu Mingxia after she won the championship in women's 3-meter springboard event of China Diving Open. This was the fifth match she took part in after she restored training. Xuan Zengyu, famous international referee in China, said excitedly, "She performs bettter and better in each contest. Her current state and level is no less than that of three years ago when she won the Olympic championship." It is also unexpected by others that, Fu, who is now 22 years old, has increased her performance difficulty. She is the only woman athlete in the world who could accomplish 107B, the difficulty index as much high as 3.1.
Last July, Fu tried to step on the springboard that she had departed for two years. In the first training course, she was able to perform 3 optional exercises. Her confidence was much lifted. Fu said that she could continue her diving career to 30 years old. Her coach Yu Fen believes all that are coming from Fu's past training and rest in recent two years.
After Atlanta Olympic Games, Fu entered Tsinghua University to study Economics. The living environment that is totally different from that of State diving team brings much pleasure and makes her feel easy. Her fatigue accumulated from overload training and competition was instantly brushed away by fresh campus atmosphere.
When Tsinghua University set up its diving team, Fu, naturally became the ace member of the team. In Tsinghua Diving Team, Fu trains far less time than that when she was in the state team, but her training effectiveness was highly raised. Fu, once extremely tired of the program, found that in reality, what she hated was not diving itself but the tedious and dull life style. Now receiving training and studying a course at the same time made her life busier. But Fu found great pleasure in her colorful and rich campus life.
With what she gained from the new life, Fu's performance now is of superb skill and superior elegance. She mounted diving platform again. It is not a simple return, but a surpass, surpassing her rivals and her old self.
She had won Gold medal in women's variety high diving of 1992 Olympic Games, and two gold medals in women's platform and springboard diving of 1996 Olympic Games. Fu should be gratified by these achievements. But now she has set up a new goal for her. Chinese divers take an advantageous position in the double diving newly set for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Once Fu is selected to take part in singles event, she will autonomously enter the double event rivalry. This is a rare opportunity awaiting her to grasp.
