Demining Activities Paralyzed in Angola: Official

Due to renewed civil war, the demining activities have paralyzed across Angola, a senior Angolan official said on June 1.

Helder Cruz, Director of the National Bureau for Removing Obstacles and Explosives, said that the 19 demining teams of the government have shrunk into five as a result of the fierce fighting and the lack of financial support.

The remaining five teams can only afford to advertising the harm of the land mines, he noted.

The demining projects have all come to a halt while most of the foreign experts in the bureau have returned home, Cruz said, adding that even over half of the Angolan personnel in his bureau left.

The director noted that the demining teams, sponsored by foreign governments or non-governmental organizations, have moved to other countries such as Mozambique and Cambodia due to insecurity in Angola.

Cruz said that there are 370 to 400 cases of land mine explosion in Angola each year, causing a lot of casualties.

As the war has escalated and the rebels of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) have planted more land mines, the causalities will increase, the director pointed out.

Angola is one of the countries that have numerous land mines. According to statistics released by the United Nations, more than 11 million land mines had been planted in the war-torn country over the past three decades, posing great danger to the life of Angolans and the economy there. (Xinhua)
