Jordanian King in Egypt for Summit Meeting

Jordanian King Abdullah Bin Hussein began talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on May 30 evening on the latest developments in the Middle East peace process.

Abdullah arrived in Cairo earlier in the day for a two-day visit and went straight into the talks, also attended by senior officials of both countries and top aides of the two leaders, Egypt's Middle East News Agency reported.

The talks are expected to cover Mubarak's call for a summit among Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinians, the news agency said.

The two leaders will review the coordination and consultations among the Arab parties on the issue.

Following the victory of Ehud Barak, moderate leader of Israel's opposition Labor party, in the May 17 elections, Mubarak called for the five-way summit in a bid to forge a unified Arab stance on the Mideast peace process.

Barak has pledged to push the peace talks with the Palestinians forward and resume negotiations with Syria and Lebanon.

Egypt is the first stop of the Jordanian king's ongoing tour, which will also take him to Algeria, Tunisia and France.
