Opposite Side of Western "Human Rights" Culture Coinage

  -- By Commentator Fu Yao

Amidst the strong protests and condemnations of people throughout the world, US-led NATO's wanton bombing has continued for more than two months in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. This is a war in complete violation of all rulings set by the UN Charter, a war without authorization of the UN. The war has destroyed such a beautiful land as of Yugoslavia and has turned that country into a land of devastation and a land of suffering and distress. People, living all the time under the shadow of war, are facing the peril of losing their life and mass ravages and destruction by rampant bombing of US-led NATO missiles. What is more, a thing makes one angry is that the US-led NATO even flagrantly missile attacked the Chinese Embassy in the capital of Yugoslavia, Belgrade, on May 7, night. Irrespective of strong protests by the Chinese Government and the Chinese people US President Clinton has even in his cheap "apology" not forgotten to find excuses to absolve himself of the responsibility for the bombing. To this US president, NATO's missile attack on the Chinese Embassy is just a "tragedy" and merely an "error" in air strike. Say specifically, the US-led NATO commits no "encroachment on human rights" but it is "Milosevic who has encroached on human rights" of people in Yugoslavia. Some brazen Western politicians, going beyond the bounds of reason for their crimes committed against Yugoslavia and bombing of the Chinese Embassy, have not even spoken a word or given a gesture in token of their sympathy and apology to the dears of those Chinese victimized by their missile attack. Contrarily, they just say "mistakes are unavoidable that often happen." This is to imply that "What can you do with me for what I has happened?" They said it is for "upholding human rights" that they bomb the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and that for translating into practice their "high ideals" and "sacred" aims they needn't care a bit about the human rights of other peoples.

For all evil doings and insanity by those manslaughters of the West one cannot but ask such a question: What about those accumulations of human civilization and norms on human rights that people have long regarded as a discovery of the "civilized West"? And have all these been used by the US and its Western partners for other nations and regions? Have all norms about human rights lie in the fact that they have just been designed and used merely by the hegemonists as pretexts for practicing interference in other nations' internal affairs?

History has given an affirmative answer to all those points raised. In the eyes of a small number of Westerners ruling at the top, they have total patent rights to all "human rights" they have vouched for and claim as their contributions to the civilization of Men. With these in mind, they say that it is they who are in a position to known and show what "human rights" are, other outsiders likewise do not, and that they should be invited to give courses on a teaching mission on "human rights" of their brand. This should be in the way, say, people should put themselves totally at the beck and call of these teachers: When you should have been listed into their roll call you must be doomed as an appendage on leash of their hegemonism. When should you not be so obedient or do not succumb at their foot you will have to be branded as a "dissident" intolerable to their stomach. Then, they will let you know what is meant by fighter bombers, mortar bombs and missiles in the place of "human rights".

There is no doubt to say the early thinkers of the West had by their notions on "human rights" pushed in a way the progress of human civilization. But in deep distress they would have been found when they should have seen that all their doctrines and theories on human rights have been lavishly adulterated and used to various sinister purposes and at the service of many a varied types of interests of Western hegemonists and ruling cliques. This is as shown by all wars that have been fought after World War II. There are also many wars launched by the US in the name of "upholding human rights" and for "maintaining world order" that have deprived a multitudinous number of people of their "human rights" and their rights to live. These, no doubt, underline the true meaning of US trumpeting for protection of 'human rights" in any part of the world as it pleases.

In 1950, the US launched its war of aggression, a war of three years that had brought great calamities to Korea and the Korean people. During the War, the US had used various types of sophisticated weaponry with the exception of atomic bomb. In 1961, the US launched its aggression against Vietnam and fought in this country a war for 14 years. In a land area of 159,000 square kilometers as in the north of Vietnam, the US had dropped on average 16.2 tons of mortar bombs per square kilometer. In 1983, the US made inroads both from the air and the sea into Grenada in the area of Caribbean for the mere purpose to tighten its control over the region. In 1986, The US flew its fighter bombers to bomb Libya in demolishing the official residence of Libyan President, killing his two sons. In 1989, the US, launching a surprise attack on Panama and by military force, seized its then incumbent president and even forcibly took the president and jailed him in the US. Beginning from last March, the US-led NATO launched its airstrikes on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a war that has already brought about fatalities to over 1,300 Yugoslav people, injuries to over 5,000 thousand, and a great tide of over one million of homeless refugees. The US-led Western hegemonists are so insane that they have gone to the length of using bombs and missiles to blast hospitals, bridges, homes of civilians, power supply systems and other various civilian facilities and establishments. On May 7, night, the US-led NATO flagrantly missile attacked the Chinese Embassy bringing great casualties and destruction to its personnel and buildings. But for these military actions and war in violation of international law and the norms of relations between countries the US has justified itself by using various pretexts and sayings as of a "tragedy" and an "error" in air strike. This is the way of the US for "upholding human rights". According to the logic of this old-brand protector of "human rights", in Korea, Vietnam, it had fought a war for "containment of Communism" and "upholding human rights". In Grenada, Libya and Panama, it was for a "cause of justice" and "human rights". In Yugoslavia, it is for bringing to justice "violators of human rights". This is to say for any sinister purpose or an ulterior motive the US could have and can launch a punitive war in the name of "upholding human rights". An example in case is one for which the US had claimed credit: For protecting the "human rights" of its officers who had been found in a fight with some local soldiers in Panama, the US had to fight a war in Panama. Wars launched like these by the US naturally involve a multitude of fatalities to numerous people of the common run in various countries. When looking up the terms about "human rights" in the US-brand dictionary of politics, "human rights" have their owner and creator and their ownership belonging only to the US in the way all people American born should suffer no wrong in any part or sovereign countries of the world. This is to say for any wrongs inflicted on any American or Americans they would be punished for their encroachment on "human rights" of the former. Though great human tide of homeless refugees may be created by US-NATO's war of aggression this is no concern of the US and that has nothing to do with the US "human rights" culture in spite of various human tragedies to be staged out of nothing. The US may make arrest of an incumbent president in an alien nation and brought him to justice by a US court. The same is true of a tragedy by a US copter pilot that had resulted in a dozen deaths of Italians but that has brought no punishment to the culprit from the US "human rights" culture. The US government has also tried its utmost to find its soldier all right in Japan though he raped a Japanese girl. This is because he has done something in contributing to protecting US "human rights" culture and its power politics and hegemony. "Your 'human rights' belong to mine. For my 'human rights' you must sacrifice your 'human rights'". By US logic, my 'human rights' are everything. Your 'human rights' must accord with the interest of mine. Things cannot be turned the other way round."

A fact to be noted is that US "human rights" culture forms part of the Western civilization. The first and second world wars had happened in the self-styled civilized developed Europe, as hotbed of disasters of Men in the 20th century. Zbigniew Brzezinski, who had been National Security Advisor to Carter Administration, put his view as representing the 20t century as one of "mass deaths". According to his calculations, in the outgoing hundred years of the 20th century there are over 167 million and more of human beings who had been killed or lost in wars. On these figures there have been draped naturally the tags of "human rights" held aloft by the US and its Western partners.

It is a rule for one to know himself much better than he does others. Brzezinski knows in his mind's eye the Western "human rights" culture has its belligerent, barbaric and lousy uncontrollable side and on its opposite side is selfish, egoistic, falsified power politics. He predicted that a future world will be marked by power politics, national hostility, antagonism and tense relations between nations. "During a certain time, amidst the whirls of national conflicts and intense struggles between nations there is the possibility for use of large-scale lethal weaponry." It is at this time, by the turn of the present century, that the US-led NATO has by its insanity sounded a warning of emergency to people throughout the world. To this, what are the world people going to do? And how should Men construct their culture in the coming new century and use their new civilization to put a stop to all evils that have been unleashed? This is a question that has already been on agenda of Men!.
