China Launches Campaign to Learn From Martyrs

The Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee on May 26 launched a campaign for people to learn from the three Chinese journalists killed in the NATO missile attack on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade early this month and those journalists still working there.

The three victims, Shao Yunhuan of the Xinhua News Agency and Xu Xinghu, Zhu Ying of the Beijing based Guangming Daily, have already been honored with the title of "revolutionary martyrs" by the Chinese government.

"This campaign will be of great significance to our efforts to improve our contingent of publicity work and do a good job in various fields at present," according to a circular issued today to all departments engaged in publicity work across China.

The circular praised the three deceased journalists and their colleagues remaining in the battlefield of Yugoslavia as "having reflected the fine mental outlook of Chinese journalists in the new period" and having set an excellent example for those staying at home.

"We should learn from their loyalty to the Party, the motherland and the people, from their selfless dedication to their career and duty, as well as from their heroic spirit of daring to fight against brutality and defying the threat of death," said the circular.

It urges all news media and other publicity and ideological organs to focus on spreading and encouraging patriotism among the people, and the effort to "expose and criticize in a profound manner the hypocritical and reactionary nature of the so-called "democracy", "human rights", "humanity" and "press freedom" preached by the U.S.-led NATO".

"Meanwhile, we must adhere to the principle of mainly doing positive and inspiring publicity so as to promote unity and stability, and try to make new contributions to promoting reform and development, maintaining social stability and advancement of the great cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century," it concluded.
